Essay Contests

NATIONAL MUSIC WEEK ESSAY CONTEST

National Music Week is celebrated each year during the first full week in May (first Sunday through the second Sunday). The purpose of the week is to make the public aware of the importance of all forms of music in our lives and to encourage participation in the celebration either as a performer or listener.

Awards: An award of $50.00 from the Agnes Fowler Endowment will be presented in each state in which a winner is declared.  An Award of Merit will be presented to each winner’s teacher.

Essay Rules:

  • Contest open to 3-6th and 7-12th grade students.

  • Essay must be typed and no longer than 500 words.

  • Essay is judged on content, neatness and legibility.

  • Membership in NFMC is NOT required to enter.

  • Mail Entry Form for National Music Week Essay Contest with deadline postmark January 10 to the State Essay Chair

  • Include a wallet size photo with your application form.

  • State winners are ineligible to re-enter.

  • The essays become the property of the NFMC and may be published totally or in part.

  • Decisions of the judges are final. Winners and state presidents will be notified.

NEBRASKA STATE MUSIC WEEK ESSAY CONTEST
Grades 3-6th

The purpose of the week is to make the public aware of the importance of all forms of music in our lives and to encourage participation in the celebration either as a performer or listener.  This contest is open to all music and non-music students.

  • Length of Essay: 250 words
  • All Essays must be typed
  • Essays will be judged on neatness, legibility, and content

The award is $25.00.

The essay must be postmarked February 1. Be sure to include the following information: Name, School (including address and principal name), Grade, Age, Address, Phone number, Music Teachers Name (if applicable). 

Send completed Nebraska form to the Nebraska Music Week Essay Contest Chair.

JOYCE WALSH JUNIOR DISABILITY AWARDS

The Junior Award for the Handicapped was established in 1983 as the official project of the Junior Division under the leadership of Joyce Walsh, Junior Counselor. The annual competition is open to any Junior instrumentalist or vocalist who is mentally or physically disabled. In 2001, the awards were renamed the Joyce Walsh Disability Awards.

The first place winner of the competition will receive an award of $2,000 and the second place winner will receive $1,500 for the purpose of musical study. Former first place winners of the award are not eligible to compete. In addition, three $500 instrument/ vocal awards will be given in each of the four regions.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Applicant must have reached 12th birthday, but not 19th, by March 1 of the audition year.
  2. Applicant must send a completed application blank (JR 16-1) to the chairman, to be received by February 1 of the application year. The JR 16-1 form may be downloaded from the web site: www.nfmc-music.org.
  3. Applicants shall send a cassette tape, not to exceed 10 minutes, to the chairman, to be received by March 1 of the application year.
  4. Applicant must be a member of the National Federation of Music Clubs either through group membership or Individual Junior Special Membership. The Junior Special Membership is $12.00. Make check payable to the National Federation of Music Clubs.
  5. Applicant must include a letter of recommendation from teacher, tutor, or clergy.
  6. Applicant must include a letter from a medical doctor stating the nature and duration of the mental or physical disability.
